FAQ

Our mission is to prepare our members for life’s challenges. Whether deploying overseas, apprehending a suspect, getting ready for an sports event, or just looking to lose weight, CrossFit ACT will help you to achieve these goals. Is CrossFit ACT for everyone? Absolutely. From seasoned athlete to novice, young or old, it’s our job to ensure that you receive the best coaching possible. If you are plagued by injuries and think you won’t be able to “keep up,” consider all options. Workouts are scaled to fit your ability, and your intensity is relative to what your body can handle.

This is not a boot camp; we will not be screaming, berating you, or asking you to go so hard that you injure yourself. All we ask is that you give 100% every day and you leave knowing you accomplished something that you can be proud of.

It is our job to get you there, every time.

What exactly is CrossFit?
CrossFit is defined as constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement. To break down this idea, the program replicates actions used in everyday life—such as jumping, lifting, running, and climbing—and hones skills that can help improve strength, balance, stability, agility, reflexes, and speed.

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide; however, it is just as easily accessible to seniors, housewives, high school athletes, and the average gym-goer looking to challenge the common fitness ideal.

What’s a “WOD”?

The “Workout Of the Day” will consist of different combinations of short-distance running, kettlebells, Olympic lifting, rope climbing, medicine balls, body-weight resistance exercises (such as pull-ups, sit-ups, burpees, squats), and rowing, among other exercises, and is formulated to work different muscle groups simultaneously. Each WOD is a practice in skill and cardio with an emphasis on form.

What if I am not able to do the exercises?

Dispel this worry from your mind. Every WOD is designed to be scaled to fit individual ability, and intensity is relative to what your body can handle. If pull-ups are part of the WOD, the seasoned athlete may easily whip out 100, while some may require the help of a resistance band, and others just learning may stay off the bar and perform exercises that replicate the movement and use the same muscle groups. CrossFit is inclusive fitness, programmed for all ages and ability levels to experience their personal best. Coach Bill will constantly evaluate your training progress and give modifications based on your ability.

Why timed WODs?

Fear not the clock. The workouts are timed merely as a way to gauge progress. During your training, you will repeat workouts and skill exercises. By timing each WOD, you can clearly understand how 50 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, and a 400-meter run once took you 30 minutes to complete, and now takes you a cool 15.

Are group classes the only training available? I’m not sure if I’m ready for that…

Personal training is also available. Please call or e-mail us for more information.

I’m a woman; should I worry about bulking up?

It’s just not possible. Women’s musculature is physically different than men’s. The dynamic workouts of CrossFit create tight muscle fibers that hug and define the feminine form, not overpower it. Lean muscles are strong muscles without bulk. Gone are the days of Vera DeMilo, replaced with names like Lauren Plumey (Shoreline CrossFit), Jolie Gentry (1st Place Finisher, CrossFit Games 2007), and Libby DiBiase (6th Place Finisher, CrossFit Games 2008).

I think I’m ready to try this CrossFit thing. How do I get started?
